Testing Assistance - Computer-Based Tests
Reader/Translator Assistance
NO Reader/Translator Assistance is allowed during ASE computer-based testing. However, test candidates who have a reading difficulty not related to a disability (as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act) are allowed to request reader/translator assistance during the May and November paper-and-pencil testing.
If English is your second language, you may bring a standard published English/foreign language dictionary to use in the computer-based test. However, the dictionary will be inspected before and after the test for notes or inserted pages.
Bilingual Test Forms
NO Bilingual (English/Spanish) test forms are available during ASE computer-based testing. However, a limited number of ASE tests are given in a bilingual (English/Spanish) format during the May and November paper/pencil testing. You do not need to do anything special to receive these tests in bilingual format. All test candidates taking the tests that are available in bilingual format receive the bilingual test booklet.
Americans with Disabilities Act
Individuals who have been professionally diagnosed with a physical or mental impairment as defined by the Americans With Disabilities Act may request assistance when taking the tests. ASE, ACT, and the ACT Centers will make a reasonable effort to accommodate your request.
To request special arrangements at the ACT Center you must follow the steps below:
- Call 1-800-525-6929 and ask for an ADA Registration Agent. The agent will note your request and collect information about your preference for test centers, dates, and times, as well as your telephone number and e-mail address.
- Send current documentation (prepared within the last five years) of your disability from a qualified professional whose credentials are appropriate to the disability (e.g., physician for physical disability, school or clinical psychologist for learning disability) to: ASE/ACT-86, Tyler Building, 301 ACT Drive, Iowa City, IA 52245. Ph: 319-337-1433. Please use an overnight mail service so that your request can be processed quickly.
- Include with your documentation specific detail regarding the type of assistance you will need (e.g., wheelchair access, sign language interpreter for instructions, etc.) The letter must state the nature of your disability and how the functional limits of the disability are related to test taking activity.
- After your request is received and evaluated, the ADA Registration Agent will contact you by telephone and/or e-mail to complete your registration and schedule your tests.
All requests for testing assistance must be approved in advance. No requests for assistance made at the ACT Center on the day of the test will be accepted.
