Frequently Asked Questions

Why is ASE introducing CBT?
Computer-based testing will create more opportunities each year for you to take ASE tests, allow you to choose between paper and pencil testing or computer-delivered testing, and provide flexibility in scheduling.

How does the process work?
Like the regular, paper and pencil testing, you must first register for the tests you desire. For this pilot phase, the only registration method available is via telephone.

 Registration period:  Jan. 5 – Feb. 9, 2004
 Testing period:  Jan. 20 – Feb. 15, 2004
 To register, call toll-free:  1-800-525-6929

Unlike the paper and pencil testing, however, you can schedule your testing date and time, subject to availability. You must allow at least two business days between the time you register and the test appointment. You will receive an appointment confirmation via e-mail.

Then, show up at the test center at your appointed time and present your photo ID. You will be seated, given a brief tutorial to acquaint you with the computer-delivered test, and then be able to take the certification test(s). After you complete your tests, you will be asked to respond to a short survey about the CBT experience.

When do I receive my test results?
Before you leave the test center you will receive your results, including a detailed score report. Certification credentials, such as certificates and insignia, will be mailed to you following the close of the testing period.

Can I register for the ASE computer-based tests online?
No. During this pilot phase, only telephone registration will be available. The person-to-person contact available via telephone registration will allow ASE to provide personalized service.

Can I take the ASE tests online, over the Internet, from my home computer?
No. The centralized test centers have been selected to present a cost-effective, reliable, secure, and proctored environment best suited to maintain the integrity of the ASE credential. Testing over the Internet presents numerous test security and operational issues that cannot be addressed, such as verifying the identity of the individual taking the test or maintaining the communications connection throughout the session.

Can I register for more than one test?
Yes. You may register for as many tests as you like (note that recertification tests and the L1 test have special prerequisites). However, each test appointment can be no longer than 4½ hours. If the tests you request require more time than this (or if you prefer to spread out your testing), your tests will be scheduled into multiple appointments. This could be a morning and afternoon of the same day, or separate appointments on different days, depending on your preference and the test center’s schedule.

Where are the test centers?
There are over 200 test centers throughout the U.S. The test centers are generally operated through community colleges around major population centers. Your confirmation e-mail will include the exact location of the test center, including the building name, room number, and driving directions.

Which ASE tests are available via CBT?
During the 2004 pilot, the Automobile Series tests (A1 through A8), the Advanced Automobile Engine Performance Specialist (L1), and the Automobile Parts Specialist (P2) tests. Additional tests may be added in the future.

How much does CBT testing cost?

Registration Fee:   $68.00 per person
Regular Tests:  $35.00 each
Advanced Test:  $70.00

Recertification: Same fee as the regular tests. Additionally, the recertification test fees are capped at $90.00. This cap does not affect the number of recertification tests you may take; only the test fees you pay. So, after three recertification tests, additional tests are available at no additional cost!

Can I make appointments for additional tests during the registration period?
Yes. Throughout the registration period you may call the CBT Registration Center to make an appointment for additional tests, provided you allow at least two business days between the time you register for the additional tests and the test appointment. You may register for as many additional tests as you wish without incurring additional registration fees.

However, you may register only once for any single test during the registration period. For example, if you register for the A1 – Engine Repair test during the Winter (CBT) test period, take the test and do not pass it, you will be ineligible to retake the A1 test until the regular Spring (paper and pencil) test period. Because computer-based testing is available between the paper and pencil test administrations, the opportunity to take any single test doubles, from two to four times per year.

If I am unable to keep an appointment for a test session, may I reschedule?
Yes. If you call the CBT Registration Office at least two full business days prior to your original appointment you may reschedule without penalty. However, if you cancel outright or do not show, you will forfeit all registration and test fees, and you will not be allowed to re-register for that test during the current testing period.

How much time do I have to take the ASE tests?
In addition to 30 minutes for check-in, the computer tutorial, and related administrative matters, between one and two hours is allowed for each regular certification test, depending upon the exam. Each recertification test, which is about half the length of its regular counterpart, is allotted ½ hour. The exception is the Advanced Engine Performance (L1) regular and re-certification test, each of which are allotted 2 hours.

Will paper and pencil testing still be available?
Yes. Paper and pencil testing will continue to be offered twice yearly in May and November. CBT simply increases the availability of ASE testing.
