Sample Questions

Automobile Test Questions

A vacuum gauge is connected to the intake manifold of an engine running at 2,000 rpm. During the test, the pointer on the gauge fluctuates rapidly between readings of 10 and 22 inches of vacuum. These readings could be caused by:
(A) a leaking intake manifold gasket.

(C) worn valve guides.

(B) worn piston rings. (D) a broken valve spring.

 


The engine of a vehicle with an automatic transmission starts in all selector positions. Which of these is the most likely cause?
(A) A shorted ignition switch

(C) An open neutral switch 

(B) A shorted neutral switch (D) An open ignition switch

 


The front end of a vehicle with disc/drum brakes dips too much when the brakes are lightly applied. Which of these is the most likely cause?
(A) Loose front wheel bearings (C) A binding caliper piston seal
(B) Air in the front brake lines

(D) A bad metering (hold off) valve

 


A vehicle has been parked all night with the key off. Battery terminal voltage measures 12.55 volts on a digital voltmeter. Technician A says that the vehicle has a key-off drain problem. Technician B says that the battery should be charged. Who is right?

A multiport fuel injected engine idles ok but hesitates when the throttle is opened. Which of these is the most likely cause?

Parts Specialist Questions

A customer comes in while a parts specialist is on the telephone with another customer. Which of these should the parts specialist do?

Advanced Engine Performance Specialist Questions

An engine misfires under load in a vehicle that failed a loaded-mode I/M test because of high HC readings. Technician A says that a bad ignition coil could be the cause. Technician B says that excessive spark plug gap could be the cause. Who is right?
(A) A only (C) Both A and B
(B) B only (D) Neither A nor B

 


After repairing a vacuum leak, a technician starts and runs the vehicle until it reaches closed loop. The technician then finds the following scan tool readings: Long Term FT: +30%, Short Term FT: -10%. Which of these is the most likely cause?

(A) Normal operation (C) Another vacuum leak
(B) A lazy oxygen sensor (D) A bad PCM
