Reader/Translator Assistance - Written Testing
The following information applies to requests for reader/translator assistance and test registrations when using a reader/translator. After reading these instructions, use the links below to download the appropriate forms. You will need both the Reader/Translator Form and the regular Registration Form to schedule a Reader/Translator testing session.
NOTE: You should not register online when requesting a Reader/Translator. Spring 2010 Reader/Translator requests must be received no later than March 24, 2010, one week prior to the regular published ASE registration deadline.
If you have a reading difficulty NOT related to a disability (as defined by the Americans With Disabilities Act), you may need a reader. If English is your second language, you may need a translator may assist you with the tests. Please note following conditions:
- Reader/Translator assistance is allowed in Spring and Fall Written Testing only. It is not allowed in Summer or Winter Computer-Based Testing.
- There is no extra cost for this service, but your request must be received by the deadline above. Late requests will not be accepted.
- You must request to use a reader/translator when you register for the tests; "walk-in" requests at the test center will be rejected.
- You must submit a new request form for the current test administration each time you want to use a Reader/Translator.
- You may register for no more than two regular certification tests per test date if you are using reader or translator assistance.
- You must find someone to act as a reader or translator yourself; ASE will not supply a reader/translator for you.
- ASE must approve the reader or translator in advance. Unauthorized or substitute readers or translators will not be allowed.
- If the test center you request is unable to provide your accommodations, you will be assigned to an alternate test center.
- You will receive a letter either approving or denying your request. If your request is approved, you should bring the letter with you to the test center, along with your admission ticket. Both the test taker and reader must also bring current (unexpired) school- or government-issued photo IDs. If you do not receive the confirmation letter, you cannot test with a reader/translator.
Guidelines for Selecting a Reader or Translator
- The reader or translator can have no automotive service experience.
- The reader or translator may read for only one test taker per night.
- The reader or translator must be over 16 years of age.
- The reader or translator can read the test questions and answers to the test taker, but may not assist the test taker in choosing answers.
