Who may take ASE Certification Tests?
You may take the regular tests (except X1, L1, and L2) as long as you are registered by the deadline and have paid the proper fees. You will become ASE-Certified if you pass one or more tests and have at least two years of hands-on work experience.

How do I register to take an ASE Certification Test?
The easiest way is to register online. You can also register via telephone or by mail. Click on the registration information to the left to learn more. Your Registration Form and fees must be received no later than the deadline. You may charge fees to your VISA, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover card. Although you may register by mail, telephone, or online, choose only one method of registration.

May I register for more than one test?
You may register for as many as four regular tests on one day. We recommend that you attempt no more than 225 questions per test session. You save money this way because the $32 Registration Fee is the same regardless of the number of tests you take. The time allotted on each test date is four hours, enough time to take more than one test.

What happens at the test center and what are some test-taking tips?
Try to be well rested. Arrive early enough to park and find the appropriate building and room location. You should report for check-in by 6:45 p.m. Bring your Admission Ticket, current (unexpired) government- or school-issued photo ID, three or four soft-lead pencils (No. 2) and an eraser with you. Books, calculators, and other reference material will not be permitted in the test room. (Exception: English-Foreign dictionaries, which will be inspected before and after testing.)
You will receive test book(s) for those test(s) printed on your Admission Ticket and an answer folder. Once you are seated, the supervisor will explain how to fill out the answer folder.
The test sessions are timed. You will have four hours to complete your tests. If you finish early, you may leave during specified dismissal periods. Use a watch to pace yourself. If a question is difficult, mark the answer that you think is correct and put a checkmark or note in the test book margin beside that question. Then go on to the next question. When you have finished the test, you may have time to go back to those questions you have marked.
It is to your advantage to answer every question. Your score will be based on the number of correct answers that you give.

When do I take Recertification Tests?
Certification credentials are valid for five years. This assures that certified professionals are recognized as being up to date in a rapidly changing industry. If it has been five years since you took a particular test, it's time to register for the corresponding Recertification Test.
Return to FAQ list
May I take Recertification Tests even if I have let my ASE certifications lapse?
Yes, you may take Recertification Tests even if your credentials expired in a specialty area. The criterion is that you have previously passed the corresponding regular test. Exception: To take the L1 Recertification test, you must be currently certified in A8 Engine Performance. To take the L2 Recertification test, you must be currently certified in T2 and T6, or S2 and S6.

May I take Recertification Tests before the five years are up?
Yes. If you have some certifications that are due to expire soon and others that are still good for some time, you may take recertification tests for any or all of them. If you recertify early, you will not be credited with the time remaining on your original certification. The new expiration date is 5 years from the date of your recertification.

May I take the regular tests to recertify?
Yes, you may opt to take the regular tests instead of the recertification tests to recertify. You will, however, have to pay the regular test and registration fees: $26 for each test ($52 for L1 or L2) and $32 registration fee).

What happens after I register?
Within two weeks, you will receive an Admission Ticket showing the time and place that your tests will be given. If you do not receive an Admission Ticket within two weeks or there was an error, phone the ASE Help Desk at (319) 337-1433 between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Central Time, Monday through Friday.
You will be required to show a current (unexpired) government- or school-issued photo ID when you check in to take your tests. The name you use to register must match the name on your current photo ID.

What happens if I register but I am unable to show for the tests?
Test fee refunds will be made upon written request if you are absent. Refunds will be made to whoever paid. Of course, if you attend the test session and open a test book, you are considered present and ineligible for a refund.

When will I receive my test results?
About four weeks after you take ASE exams, you will be mailed a detailed score report. If you pass and have satisfied the work experience requirement, you will be mailed your ASE credentials a few weeks later. Test results CANNOT be released over the phone. (Failure to make full payment will result in ASE/ACT withholding your credentials.) If you participate in an employer's or auto manufacturer's program that includes ASE certification, your updated certification status will be available to them within eight weeks.
Reminder: If you change your address after you take the tests, you must notify ASE in order to receive your test results, to be notified of expiring certifications, and to receive The ASE Blue Seal Tech News newsletter.

Can I get my test results via e-mail or the ASE website?
ASE does not release test results via e-mail. Broadcasting your test results via e-mail carries inherent security risks due to inaccurate e-mail addresses and unsecure e-mail transmissions. However, you can now securely view your certification status online through our new service called myASE. Click on the button labeled 'myASE' at the top of this page to get started!

What do I receive to prove that I am ASE Certified?
When you pass one or more tests and fulfill the work experience requirement, you will receive The Blue Seal of Excellence-the nationally recognized ASE emblem on a certificate suitable for framing. Also included will be an insignia for your sleeve or pocket and a wallet card. Each card lists your areas of certification and expiration dates. In addition, you will also receive the award-winning newsletter, The ASE Blue Seal Tech News.

I have a Master Technician certificate, but some of the test areas have expired. Am I still considered to hold Master Technician status?
No. You earn Master Technician status when you achieve certification in all the required testing areas. For example, technicians certified in tests A1 through A8 are Master Automobile Technicans; those certified in tests T2 through T7 are Master Medium/Heavy Truck Technicians, and so forth. However, Master Techncian status is not for life, and you must keep each one of those certifications current in order to maintain it. If your Master Technician status is lost because one or more of the required certifications has lapsed, it can be reinstated by simply taking and passing the necessary recertification tests.
