ASE Collision Repair and Refinish Test Series

Objective: To identify and recognize those collision repair technicians and refinishers who possess knowledge of the skills necessary to properly analyze and repair automotive collision damage and correct paint finish damage.

Scope Of Program: The ASE Collision Repair Test Series includes one test for paint refinishers and three other tests for repair technicians, covering non-structural damage repair, structural damage repair, and vehicle mechanical and electrical system repair. These tests are all intended for hands-on collision technicians. ASE also offers a test specially designed for collision damage estimators.

Test Development: The questions that appear on the collision repair and refinishing tests are written and approved by a cross-section of industry experts that includes collision repair technicians, refinishers, and representatives of vehicle manufacturers, information providers, paint manufacturers, parts and equipment manufacturers, industry trainers, and insurance companies. This procedure ensures that the tests are fair to all technicians without bias towards any specific manufacturer, insurer, or refinishing system.

Format: The scored portion of each test consists of 50 to 55 multiple-choice questions that address various content areas. Each test may contain up to ten additional questions that are included for statistical research purposes only. Answers to these questions do not affect test scores, but since they are not separately identified in the test, all questions should be answered.

Certification Requirements: To become ASE certified, technicians must pass one or more of the Collision Repair exams and present proof of two years of relevant work experience. Those who pass the three collision repair tests plus the painting and refinishing test become ASE-certified Master Collision Repair/Refinishing technicians. Technicians may substitute two years of relevant formal training for up to one year of the work experience requirement.

Recognition: Those who earn certification will be issued wallet and wall credentials, plus an appropriate sleeve insignia. They will also receive ASE’s Blue Seal Tech News.

Recertification: To remain certified, collision repair and refinish technicians must be retested every five years. This requirement ensures ASE-certified technicians are staying current with changes in the industry.

Fees: There is a $32 non-refundable registration fee per person and a $26 test fee for each test when taken in the paper/pencil format. There is a $70 registration fee and a $37 test fee to take the computer-based test.  All computer-based testing fees are non-refundable.
