ASE Parts Specialist Test Series

Objective: The objective of the Parts Specialist Certification Program is to improve the quality of service offered by automobile and medium/heavy truck parts specialists through the voluntary testing and certification of parts professionals.
Scope of Program: The Parts Specialist Series includes six tests: Automobile Parts Specialist, Medium/Heavy Truck Dealership Parts Specialist, Medium/Heavy Truck Aftermarket Brake Parts Specialist, Medium/Heavy Truck Aftermarket Suspension and Steering Parts Specialist, and General Motors Parts Consultant. Each test includes questions on communication and sales skills, vehicle systems knowledge, vehicle identification, cataloguing skills, and inventory management.
Test Development: Test questions are written and approved by a cross section of industry experts familiar with the parts industry. They are entirely job-related. They are designed to test the skills that counterpeople need to know in order to be effective parts specialists. The questions are written to deal with practical problems encountered in day-to-day work situations.
Format: The scored portion of each test consists of approximately 45-70 multiple-choice questions. Each test may contain up to ten additional questions that are included for statistical research purposes only. Answers to these questions do not affect test scores, but since they are not separately identified in the test, all questions should be answered.
Certification Requirements: To become ASE certified, a counterperson must pass one or more of the Parts Specialist exams and show proof of two years of on-the-job work experience as a parts specialist.
Recognition: Those who earn certification will be issued wallet and wall credentials, plus an appropriate insignia. They will also receive ASE’s Blue Seal Tech News.
Recertification: To remain certified, parts specialists must be retested every five years. This requirement ensures ASE-certified parts specialists are staying current with changes in the industry.
Fees: There is a $32 non-refundable registration fee per person and a $26 test fee for each test when taken in the paper/pencil format. There is a $70 registration fee and a $37 test fee to take the computer-based test. All computer-based testing fees are non-refundable.
Registration/Fees: ASE Parts Specialist tests are offered in paper/pencil format. In addition, the Automotive Parts Specialist test (P2) is offered in a computer-based format.
