High Marks for New ASE Testing System

Release date: 8/24/2012

Technicians like convenience, flexibility and quick results!

The comments ASE has received since January on the new computer-based testing system have been overwhelmingly positive.  The changeover addresses requests from technicians for more frequent testing, more choices for when to test and faster test results. ASE’s experience with this testing concept since 2004 helped refine the program and make the transition away from written testing easier. As with the introduction of any new technology, there were a few bumps in the road, but technicians tell us that the instant results, year-round testing and flexibility of taking the test on their schedule are very popular.

There are a number of free resources on the ASE website at www.ase.com to help understand how the new ASE testing program works. There is a tutorial and sample test, along with descriptions of what to expect at the test center in terms of check-in, security, etc. Registration and scheduling is quick and easy through the individual’s myASE account, and you can do both in one sitting. There’s also a toll-free number to call if you have any questions.

Anyone who has ever taken and ASE certification test will find the computer based version quite familiar. The type and style of questions hasn’t changed and many have told us they actually prefer the new format to the old written version. As before, the recertification tests are about half as long as the regular certification exams and it doesn’t matter how long your certifications have been expired, to renew them you only need take the recertification tests.

Since we are offering testing year-round, there are fewer centers, but with more hours available to schedule certification exams. We started the year with about 300 test centers nationwide and expect to end the year with about 400 centers as we continue to add them as needed. As with any new program, there is fine-tuning to do as you learn from the feedback. We continuously evaluate the ASE program for improvements and we listen to all the feedback we receive.

The flexibility and convenience for automotive professionals offered by CBT simply can’t be duplicated in a written format. The advantages are significant. One important thing to remember is that the scheduling flexibility allows an individual the freedom to either group or spread out multiple certifications as they wish within the eight-week windows with no additional cost. But the best testing times do tend to go quickly, so the earlier one registers and schedules their certifications, the more choices will be available. You can find more information about the ASE certification program on the website at www.ase.com.
