5. Who may take ASE certification tests?

Anyone may take the tests (except X1, L1, and L2) as long as he or she is registered by the deadline and has paid the proper fees. To become ASE-certified, you must pass one or more tests and have at least two years of hands-on work experience. Link.

6. How do I register to take an ASE certification test?

  • Mail registration - Click here to download a Registration Booklet. Forms must be received by the deadline.

7. May I register for more than one test?

Yes. You save money this way because the $36 Registration Fee is the same regardless of the number of tests you take. You may register for as many as four regular tests on one day. We recommend that you attempt no more than 225 questions per test session. The time allotted on each test date is four hours, enough time to take more than one test. (Do not register for additional tests if taking the Advanced Level L1 or L2 tests.)

8. What happens after I register?

Within two weeks, you will receive an Admission Ticket showing the time and place that your tests will be given. If you do not receive an Admission Ticket within two weeks or there was an error, call the ASE Help Desk at 1-800-388-5584 between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm Central Time, Monday through Friday.

Or you may send an e-mail to asehelp@act.org with your name, ASE ID number, and tests registered for.

9. What do I need to study for the test?

To do your best on the tests, you should be familiar with the style of questions used on ASE tests, and be sure that you have a good understanding of what is covered on each test.

ASE has several resources that can help you prepare, including Study Guides that list all the tasks covered on each test, and The Official ASE Practice Tests. To see all the resources we have, click here.

10. What happens at the test center and what are some test-taking tips?

You will be required to show a current (unexpired) government- or school-issued photo ID when you check in to take your tests. The name you use to register must match the name on your current photo ID.

Try to be well rested. Arrive early enough to park and find the appropriate building and room location. You should report for check-in by 6:45 pm Bring your Admission Ticket, photo ID, three or four soft-lead pencils (No. 2) and an eraser with you. Books, calculators, and other reference material will not be permitted in the test room. (Exception: English-Foreign dictionaries, English/Spanish Glossary, etc., which will be inspected before and after testing.) Testing is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM, but may be delayed to complete check-in.

You will receive test book(s) for those test(s) printed on your Admission Ticket and an answer folder. Once you are seated, the supervisor will explain how to fill out the answer folder.

The test sessions are timed. You will have four hours to complete your tests. If you finish early, you may leave during specified dismissal periods. Use a watch to pace yourself. If a question is difficult, mark the answer that you think is correct and put a checkmark or note in the test book margin beside that question. Then go on to the next question. When you have finished the test, you may have time to go back to those questions you have marked.

It is to your advantage to answer every question. Your score will be based on the number of correct answers that you give.

11. I lost (or never got) my Admission Ticket. Can I get into the test center without one? When and where do I go to take my tests?

If you don't have an Admission Ticket, here is what you should do:

1. Confirm that you are registered to take the ASE tests. There are two ways to do that -

A. If you have an account on myASE, just log on and click on the "Certification Status" tab. Scroll down to the section labeled "Your Current Registrations." Your upcoming tests will be listed, along with the test center and date. If you don't already have an account on myASE, you can create one now and view your records in 30 minutes. Click here to go to myASE.

B. If you don't have an account on myASE, or if you still have questions, call the ASE Help Desk from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central Time, Monday - Friday. On test dates, the office is open late. The phone number is 1-800-388-5584. The agent will confirm whether you are registered, and give you the test date and test center location.

2. Grab your photo ID and #2 pencils. You do not have to present an admission ticket to get into the test center. The testing staff will have your name on their test roster. But everyone is REQUIRED to present a current government- or school-issued photo ID. If you forget your ID (or your wallet was stolen, etc.) you will NOT be allowed to take the tests.

3. Show up on time. Testing at all test centers starts promptly at 7 p.m. (local time), so be sure to leave early enough to allow for traffic delays, find a parking place, and find the testing room. You should arrive for check-in by 6:45 p.m. Late arrivals will not be admitted after 7 p.m.

If you don't know where the test center is, you can find the street address and link to a Yahoo! map using our Test Center Locator. Click here to go to the locator.

12. How does ASE protect the integrity of its progrm?

The Institute reserves the right to cancel any test score, bar participation in the ASE Program, or revoke certification if ASE/ACT has any reason to question the validity of a test score; suspect misconduct at the Test Center; suspect an individual of creating or presenting fraudulent ASE certificates, score reports, or other credentials; or suspect the reporting of fraudulent registration information. The Institute also reserves the right to verify any reported work experience through employers and others.
