  • L1/L2 Recert. Tests: $56 each
  • Recertification tests cap out at $74, regardless of number of tests you take

3. My ASE certifications have expired. Do I need to take the regular tests, or can I take the recertification versions?

You may take the Recertification tests even if your credentials expired in a specialty area. You simply must have been previously certified in that specialty area.

Exception: To take the L1 Recertification test, you must be currently certified in A8. For L2 Recertification, you must be currently certified in Diesel Engines (A9, H2, S2 or T2) and Electrical/Electronic Systems (A6, H6, S6, or T6).

4. When do I take recertification tests?

Certification credentials are valid for five years. If it has been five years since you took a particular test, it's time to register for the corresponding Recertification Test. (The five-year requirement assures certified professionals are current in the rapidly changing industry.)

5. May I take recertification tests even if I have let my ASE certifications lapse?

Yes. You may take Recertification Tests provided you have previously passed the corresponding regular test.

Exception: To take the L1 Recertification test, you must be currently certified in A8 Engine Performance. To take the L2 Recertification test, you must be currently certified in Diesel Engines (A9, H2, S2 or T2) and Electrical/Electronic Systems (A6, H6, S6, or T6).

6. May I take recertification tests before the five years are up?

Yes. If you have some certifications that are due to expire soon and others that are still good for some time, you may take recertification tests for any or all of them. If you recertify early, you will not be credited with the time remaining on your original certification. The new expiration date is 5 years from the date of your recertification.

7. May I take the regular tests to recertify?

Yes, you may opt to take the regular tests instead of the recertification tests to recertify. You will, however, have to pay the regular test and registration fees: $28 for each test (except $56 each for L1 or L2) and $36 registration fee.

8. I have a Master Technician certificate, but some of the test areas have expired. Am I still considered to hold Master Technician status?

No. You earn Master Technician status when you achieve certification in all the required testing areas.

For example, technicians certified in tests A1 through A8 are Master Automobile Technicians; those certified in tests T2 through T7 are Master Medium/Heavy Truck Technicians, and so forth. However, Master Technician status is not for life, and you must keep each one of those certifications current in order to maintain it. If your Master Technician status is lost because one or more of the required certifications has lapsed, it can be reinstated by simply taking and passing the necessary recertification tests.
