1. Which ASE certification tests are being offered in bilingual format?

Four Automobile / Light Truck tests are offered in a parallel, English-Spanish format.

  • A1 – Engine Repair
  • A4 – Suspension and Steering
  • A5 – Brakes
  • A6 – Electrical/Electronic Systems

At present, recertification tests are not available in bilingual form.

2. Why are only four ASE tests being offered in this bilingual format?

These certification specialty areas were chosen because they are historically the most frequently attempted by first-time test takers. These areas represent those in which first-time test takers most often work in their jobs, day-to-day. And, these are the certification specialty areas most in demand among employers. Technicians are most likely to begin a certification path with one of these tests.

3. Are Spanish-language support materials available, in addition to the ASE test questions?

ASE provides The Official ASE Catalog of Tests, useful in reviewing and preparing to take the certification tests at no charge, upon request. For these four tests (A1 – Engine Repair, A4 – Suspension and Steering, A5 – Brakes and A6 – Electrical/Electronic Systems) the Test Specifications and Task Lists are available in the Spanish-language section of the ASE website. Several of the independent publishers of ASE preparation materials have Spanish versions of their guides, also. We also have our own glossary of Terms; also spanish training resources.

9. Do you have other resources for technicians whose first language is Spanish?

Yes, ASE has produced two glossaries.

I. ASE Glossary Of Automotive Terminology (English-Spanish)

This glossary is designed primarily as a tool to assist Spanish-speaking automotive professionals who take the ASE certification exams. Due to the significant variation in Spanish from different parts of the world, multiple Spanish translation options are sometimes given. No effort has been made in this glossary to identify which Spanish option is the best, or most universally understood, translation.

This professionally published document can be purchased from ASE and utilized in the test center. For general usage outside of the test center, a database version of this glossary is also available for download. Users must have Access 2000 software, or later version, installed on their computer to run this file. The program allows electronic searches for terminology from English to Spanish, or from Spanish to English.

II. ASE English / Preferred Spanish Glossary link

The translations contained in this glossary represent most, if not all, of the terms a technician may encounter on the ASE bilingual exams. The “Preferred Spanish” translation for each English term or phrase is intended to represent a translation that should be correctly understood by any knowledgeable Spanish-speaking technician, regardless of where their Spanish originates.

This glossary can help Spanish-speaking technicians familiarize themselves with the terms they may encounter on the ASE bilingual exams. However, it is important to note that this glossary may NOT be taken into the test center. Please see the ASE Policy On Use of Foreign Language Dictionaries During The Test below for more information.

Publishers and curriculum developers of Spanish materials should find this glossary useful in their efforts to produce Spanish content that can be universally understood.

10. Why is the Department of Labor funding ASE's bilingual efforts?

Considering the impact of Spanish-speaking technicians currently working in the automotive service industry, and the expected growth of Spanish-speaking technicians over the next 10 years, funding programs that improve professional development of this segment of the workforce substantially meets the objectives of DOL's High Growth Training Initiative for this industry.
