NOTE: The requirements for Master Truck Technician have changed effective January 1, 2006. When you hold the following M/H Truck certifications, you will earn Master M/H Truck Technician status:
- T2 - Diesel Engines
- T3 - Drive Trains
- T4 - Brakes
- T5 - Suspension and Steering
- T6 - Electrical/Electronic Systems
- T7- Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning

Objective: To identify and recognize those medium and heavy truck technicians who can demonstrate knowledge of the skills necessary to diagnose, service, and repair different systems of Class 4 through Class 8 trucks and tractors.
Scope of Program: The ASE Medium/Heavy Truck Test Series includes eight certification exams: Gasoline Engines (T1), Diesel Engines (T2), Drive Train (T3), Brakes (T4), Suspension and Steering (T5), Electrical/ Electronic Systems (T6), Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) (T7), and Preventive Maintenance Inspection (PMI) (T8).
Test Development: The questions that appear on the truck tests are written and approved by a cross-section of industry experts that includes working truck technicians, vocational educators, fleet maintenance directors, and representatives from medium/heavy truck manufacturers and parts and equipment manufacturers. This procedure ensures that the tests are fair for all technicians without bias towards any specific truck manufacturer.
Format: The scored portion of each test consists of 40-65 multiple-choice questions that address various content areas. Each test may contain up to ten additional questions that are included for statistical research purposes only. Answers to these questions do not affect test scores, but since they are not separately identified in the test, all questions should be answered.
Certification Requirements: To become ASE certified, technicians must pass one or more of the Medium/Heavy Truck exams and present proof of at least two years of relevant work experience. Those who pass the Diesel Engines, Drive Train, Brakes, Suspension and Steering, Electrical/ Electronic Systems and HVAC tests, become ASE-certified Master Medium/Heavy Truck Technicians. Technicians may substitute two years of relevant formal training for up to one year of the work experience requirement.
Recognition: Those who earn certification will be issued wallet and wall credentials, plus an appropriate sleeve insignia. They will also receive ASE’s Blue Seal Tech News newsletter.
Recertification: To remain certified, truck technicians must be retested every five years. This requirement ensures ASE-certified technicians are staying current with changes in the industry.
Fees: There is a $36 non-refundable registration fee per person and a $28 test fee for each test when taken in the paper/pencil format. There is a $74 registration fee and a $38 test fee to take the computer-based test. All computer-based testing fees are non-refundable.
