ASE Transit Bus Test Series

Objective: To identify and recognize those Transit Bus technicians who demonstrate knowledge of the skills necessary to diagnose, service, and repair various systems on transit buses.
Scope of Program: The ASE Transit Bus Test Series includes eight certification exams: Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Engines (H1), Diesel Engines (H2), Drive Train (H3), Brakes (H4), Suspension and Steering (H5), Electrical/Electronic Systems (H6), Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) (H7), and Preventive Maintenance And Inspection (PMI) (H8).
Test Development: The questions that appear on the Transit Bus tests are written and approved by a cross-section of industry experts that includes working bus technicians, transit bus trainers, transit agency directors, and representatives from parts and equipment manufacturers. This procedure ensures that the tests are fair for all technicians without bias towards any specific bus manufacturer.
Format: The scored portion of each test consists of 40-50 multiple-choice questions that address various content areas. For the first test administration each test will be approximately double in length to include questions on the test that are for statistical purposes and will not be scored. Answers to these questions do not affect test scores, but since they are not separately identified in the test, all questions should be answered.
Certification Requirements: To become ASE certified, technicians must pass one or more of the Transit Bus exams and present proof of at least two years of relevant work experience. Those who pass H1 or H2, plus H3 through H8 are recognized as ASE-certified Master Transit Bus Technicians. Technicians may substitute two years of relevant formal training for up to one year of the work experience requirement.
Recognition: Those who earn certification will be issued wallet and wall credentials, plus an appropriate sleeve insignia. They will also receive ASE’s Blue Seal Tech News newsletter.
Recertification: To remain certified, transit bus technicians must be retested every five years. This requirement ensures ASE-certified technicians are staying current with changes in the industry.
Fees: There is a $36 non-refundable registration fee per person and a $27 fee for each test when taken in paper/pencil format.
Registration: The Transit Bus test series is available in Paper/Pencil test format only. The tests are offered every May and November at over 700 test centers nationwide. Click here for more information on registering for tests.
