ASE School Bus Test Series

Objective: To identify and recognize those technicians who possess the knowledge and skills necessary to diagnose, service, and repair different subsystems of Type A, B, C, and D school buses.
Scope of Program: The ASE School Bus Technician Test Series includes seven certification exams: Body Systems and Special Equipment (S1), Diesel Engines (S2), Drive Train (S3), Brakes (S4), Suspension and Steering (S5), Electrical/Electronic Systems (S6), and Air Conditioning Systems and Controls (S7). While several of these tests parallel existing ASE Medium/Heavy Truck tests, each one is designed to test knowledge of systems that are specific to school buses.
Test Development: ASE initiated the School Bus Technician Test Series at the request of the National Association for Pupil Transportation (NAPT). The questions that appear on the School Bus Technician Tests are written and approved by a cross-section of industry experts including representatives of major school bus and chassis manufacturers, vehicle component manufacturers, fleet maintenance directors, and school bus technicians from across the country. This ensures that the tests are fair to all technicians, without bias towards any specific manufacturer or local regulations.
Format: The scored portion of each test consists of 45-55 multiple-choice questions that address various content areas. Each test may also contain up to ten additional questions that are included for statistical research purposes only. Answers to these do not affect test scores, but since they are not separately identified in the test, all questions should be answered.
Certification Requirements: To become ASE certified, technicians must pass one or more of the School Bus exams and present proof of two years of relevant hands-on work experience. Those who pass the Body Systems, Diesel Engines, Drive Train, Brakes, Suspension & Steering, and Electrical/Electronic Systems tests are recognized as ASE-certified Master School Bus technicians. At this time, the Air Conditioning Systems and Controls test is not required to achieve Master status. Technicians may substitute two years of relevant formal training for up to one year of the work experience requirement.
Recognition: Those who earn certification will be issued wallet, and wall credentials, plus an appropriate sleeve insignia. They will also receive ASE’s Blue Seal Tech News newsletter.
Recertification: To remain certified, school bus technicians must be retested every five years. This requirement ensures ASE-certified technicians are staying current with changes in the industry.
Fees: There is a $36 non-refundable registration fee per person and a $27 fee for each test when taken in the paper/pencil format.
Registration: The School Bus test series is available in Paper/Pencil test format only. The tests are offered every May and November at over 700 test centers nationwide. Click here for more information on registering for tests.
