Recertify
Technicians must re-test every five years to retain their certification. The Medium-Heavy Truck recertification tests (T1R – T8R) are about half as long as the initial certification tests. There’s a $36 registration fee which is paid only once during a registration period. Tests are $33 each. You may take as many recertification tests as you want in a testing period and we cap the cost of your tests at $99. So the most anyone would pay to recertify in a single testing period is $135—no matter how many recertification tests are taken.

Requirements
ASE Certification requires the technician to pass an ASE Certification test and have at least two years of relevant work experience, but you may substitute one year with formal training from a high school, trade school, or community college. Satisfactory completion of OEM-Sponsored Co-op or Apprenticeships will completely satisfy the work experience requirement. You can take most ASE tests prior to acquiring the work experience, but your certification may not be valid until the requirements are met and you have submitted to ASE the Work Experience Reporting Form. More information about Work Experience.
ASE Master Status
Currently, those who are certified in tests T2-T7 are recognized as ASE Certified Master Medium-Heavy Truck Technicians.
In 2017, the requirements for Master Medium/Heavy Truck Technician status will change. Those who are certifying/recertifying after January 1, 2017, must pass the Preventive Maintenance and Inspection (PMI) test (T8) in addition to the previous requirements, as shown below.
If Certifying or Recertifying in….. |
Requirements for
Master Medium/Heavy Truck Technician Status |
2016 |
T2, T3, T4, T5, T6, T7 |
2017 |
T2, T3, T4, T5, T6, T7, T8 |
You must recertify in each test area every five years. If you let one of the required certifications expire, you lose your Master Technician status. You can regain it by taking the Recertification Test(s), even after you let a certification expire. Note that there is no time limit on returning. Once you pass your original ASE test, you only need to take the Recertification Test, no matter how long it's been expired. For more Master Status information, click here.
