90 Days to Take Your Test

ASE testing is available year-round. When you register for an ASE test, you will have 90 days from the original date of purchase to schedule an appointment and take your test at any of the nearly 500 Prometric test centers across the United States and Canada. You should schedule appointments for all tests as soon as possible. If you do not complete testing within 90 days, the untaken tests will expire and you will forfeit your fees.

Separate Registration and Test Fees

ASE is required to collect sales tax on applicable purchases in AK, AR, AZ, CA, CO, HI, IA, IL, IN, LA, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, NC, NE, NJ, NM, NY, OH, PA, RI, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI, WV, and WY.

30-Day Wait Period

If you take an ASE test and receive a “Pass” or “Fail” test result, you must wait 30 full days before you can purchase and schedule the same test again.

Missed Tests

There are no refunds or credits for a missed testing appointment. If you miss your appointment or arrive late, the test is scored as "No Show", and all fees are forfeited. You can register for that same test again, but you must pay the registration fee and test fee again. To re-purchase a missed test, you must wait until the official “No Show” test result is posted to myASE. When re-purchasing a missed recertification test you must pay the registration fee and recertification test fee again.

Making a Testing Appointment

Your test date, time, and test center location are not automatically assigned. You must schedule an appointment for any tests and complete all testing by the Must Take Test By date shown in your myASE unscheduled tests tab, or you will forfeit your fees. If you are taking more than one test, you can group them together into a single appointment or spread them out over several appointments. The date, time, test center, and grouping are up to you.

To make an appointment, log in to myASE or call 800-390-6789 for assistance by phone. If you plan to test at a Prometric Satellite test center, you must call the test center directly to schedule your appointment if the site location includes a blue bubble in Prometric’s scheduling system. Click Test Center Information to view the test center’s phone number. You can find the test centers near you by using the test center locator.

Arrive Early

Plan to arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment start time to allow enough time to park, find the test center office, and for check-in. Late arrivals may be turned away by the test center staff. If a test cannot be taken because of arriving late, all fees are forfeited.

Bring Your Photo ID with Signature / Test Center Security Procedures

You are required to present a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID in good condition and in its original form that includes your photo and signature. An expired ID or a photo or paper copy of an ID will not be accepted. The name on your ASE record must match the name as it appears on your primary ID. You must present a valid driver's license, passport book, state ID, national ID, or military ID. If you are a student, a current school ID is acceptable. A valid Canadian permanent resident card or health care card is acceptable if you are testing in Canada. If you are testing outside of your country of citizenship, you must present a valid passport book. If either a photo or signature is missing from your primary ID, an additional form of ID that includes the missing element is required. An original social security card is acceptable as a secondary ID to confirm your signature only. A valid, original permanent resident card or passport card is acceptable as a secondary ID for the photo requirement only. If you do not bring acceptable and valid forms of ID, or your identity cannot be verified due to an illegible or damaged ID, you will not be allowed to test and fees are forfeited.

To safeguard the test questions and ensure fairness for everyone, enhanced security procedures are used at the test center. You will be given a copy of all test center regulations when checking in. Please read this carefully. You will be assigned a small locker to store all your personal items (cell phones, electronic devices, watch and other jewelry, keys, wallet, medications, food, drinks, etc.), so please limit what you bring with you to the test center. Water is allowed in the testing room. No other beverages are permitted. All water must be in a clear or transparent container with a lid or cap. All labels must be removed, and the container will be inspected for notes or other test aids. You will need to remove the lid/cap for visual inspection by the test center staff. If the container does not meet requirements, it must be kept in your assigned locker. No jewelry is allowed in the testing room, other than wedding bands and engagement rings. Bracelets, necklaces, earrings, headbands, hair clips, neck ties, etc. must be removed and stored in your locker. If you need tissues, the test center will provide them.

You will be asked to pull up your pants legs and sleeves and turn your pockets inside-out. You will be screened with a hand-held metal detector. You will be asked to remove your eyeglasses for visual inspection. Wedding bands and engagement rings are also visually inspected. This screening process is repeated every time you return from a break. Please note that the same security procedures apply to everyone taking tests at Prometric centers, regardless of the type of test - automotive, medical, business, or education. If you do not comply with the directions of the test center staff and Prometric security regulations, you will not be allowed to test and will forfeit your fees.

Breaks

You can take a break between tests but keep it as brief as possible with the recommendation of no more than 10 minutes. If you take a break during a test, the test timer will continue to run, resulting in a loss of time to complete the test. Using your cell phone, accessing study materials, referring to or making notes, discussing test questions, or leaving the building or testing lab floor for any reason during a break is strictly prohibited and subject to cancellation of incomplete or untaken tests and the forfeiture of fees.

Release of Test Results and Certification Status

If your employer or school paid for your test, they will be able to view the pass/fail/no-show test result, but not the specific test score. If you paid for the test yourself, only you can see the pass/fail/no-show test result, in addition to the specific test score. You can reprint a score report in myASE at any time.

ASE does reserve the right to confirm whether you do or do not hold ASE certifications and in which areas. This is information about only those tests that you have passed - basically, it is the same information that is on your wall display certificate. If you do not want ASE to share this information with anyone else, you can opt out by unchecking the box labeled “Release my ASE status to others” in your profile in myASE. If you do so, ASE will not release your certification status to your employer, OEM, or other group or individual. This may prevent you from being reimbursed for tests, participating in recognition programs, accessing service information, etc.

Notice to Organizations Using the ASE Examinations

The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) has developed these certification examinations expressly for use in the context of voluntary certification of vehicle service professionals, and all future revisions and refinements will be made in that context. ASE expressly disclaims any responsibility for the actions of organizations or entities which decide to use ASE examinations in any context other than ASE's voluntary certification of vehicle service professionals.

The Institute reserves the right to cancel any test score, bar participation in the ASE Program, or revoke certification if ASE has any reason to question the validity of a test score, suspect misconduct at the test center, suspect an individual of creating or presenting fraudulent ASE certificates, score reports, or other credentials, or suspect the reporting of fraudulent registration information. ASE may also bar future participation in the ASE program for inappropriate, unacceptable, threatening, or violent conduct when interacting with ASE staff or Prometric test center employees.

If you enter a registration or schedule an appointment on behalf of someone else, you certify that each person registered or scheduled accepts these terms as well.
